Criston - Infrastructure Management

A network consists of two different but complementary populations: workstations and servers on the one hand, and network equipment (gateways, switches, etc.) on the other. Although these two populations constantly interact with each other, they are administered by separate teams using different procedures which complicates the task of consolidating a universal inventory.

Detected Equipment

The CRISTON IM application runs on a simple PC and quickly reports the information needed to manage the Information System population:

Workstations & Peripherals

The entire workstation population is identified and measured in terms of quantity and location. CRISTON IM scans all workstations to establish their hardware and software profile. ?Roving? workstations, i.e. those not connected to the Windows domain are pinpointed and reported as they pose a risk in terms of security and intrusion.

Network Equipment

Network equipment such as gateways, switches, servers, IP phones, printers, WiFi wireless terminals are identified and located. CRISTON IM scans all equipment to establish its hardware, software and connectivity profile.

Connectivity

CRISTON IM adds the aspect of connectivity to dynamically pinpoint any workstation on the network. For each gateway and switch type network item, CRISTON IM captures its connectivity, i.e. a list of active workstations. On completing the actual inventory, CRISTON IM consolidates this information to uniquely identify the interface where each workstation is located.

Invisible or Hidden Equipment

CRISTON IM adopts a pragmatic approach by identifying items that are incorrectly configured and/or hidden and indicating those areas of the network that are opaque. This information is integrated into the validation procedure for each connection to the IS since each item can be processed to correct its configuration, or be eliminated.

Optimized multi-Brand Processing

Microsoft Windows workstations and servers are identified and profiled using their native WMI protocol with no need for additional agents. Similarly, network equipment is handled using its resident SNMP agents, regardless of type or make.

Integrated technologies specific to many equipment manufacturers (Cisco, Microsoft, Nortel, HP, etc.) provide a detailed hardware description of each equipment item (model, serial No., CPU, disks, module frames, printers) and software (operating system, installed and updated software).

CRISTON IM goes further in terms of the information discovered and the depth of details collected. This targeted interrogation makes it possible to process both infrastructure and installed servers and workstations as well as the connectivity of all these items.
Furthermore, if an item of equipment is not recognized, Criston undertakes to include recognition on the basis of information collected by the product within 5 working days.

Generating Reports

CRISTON IM provides numerous reports by manufacturer, equipment type (PC, printer, switch, etc.) or by subnetwork as well as management reports (number of switch interfaces used/free, etc.). The SQL database is fully documented so that non-standard requests, even complex ones, can be created easily.

"It's a network administrator's dream, a system that identifies, isolates, and repairs glitches all by itself. As a result, the technology reduces overall IT cost of ownership by as much as 50 percent. Fantasy? Not by a long shot. This is the reality of autonomic computing... "

CRN, Jan 2004, on the potential of autonomic computing
